I captured this image in Alaska, using a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens on a tripod with an aperture of f/5.6 at 1/40th of a second, at 400mm. Bald Eagles like to sit perched on a branch while constantly scoping out their surroundings (both on the ground and in the air), making it time consuming to get a straight on profile shot from the side like this. They are such magnificent birds though that I enjoyed just admiring this one through the focal length afforded by the lens as much as I did trying to get the perfect shot. A lot of times there will be another bird close by in the same tree and sometimes there will even be many Bald Eagles in the same tree… An even more magnificent sight.
I recently spotted a Bald Eagle in central California, north of Fresno in the Lake Millerton area. It was inflight, spectacular like they all are, and alone. I was told by the ranger that it’s one of only a few in the area and part of a breeding pair monitored by biologists.
